Chapter 8

LeMaine’s instincts got the better of him and he flung himself forward. He jumped onto his knees, turned backward, and blocked Kellogg and O’Hara with his own body. “Don’t shoot!” Five Cezians aimed their rifles at LeMaine’s face. He raised his hands. “Don’t shoot! We’re unarmed!”

“Get down on the floor!” one of the Cezians bellowed in clear, unmistakable English. “Get away from that man.”

“No!” LeMaine choked. “If you want to kill someone, kill me. This man is injured and he needs medical attention right away. If you don’t return my medic’s tool kit, this man will die. Is that what you want Elian Command to find out when word gets back to them? Do you want them to find out you let one of their soldiers die rather than give him medical treatment?”

LeMaine stammered to a halt and gasped to catch his breath. He no longer held out any hope that the Cezians would see sense in time to save O’Hara’s life, but LeMaine had to try.

“Who are you?” the voice boomed from behind the aliens holding LeMaine at gunpoint.

“I told you at the outpost! I’m Captain LeMaine of the Elian Special Forces. We came to respond to a distress call. We had no idea what was going on with the colonists on this planet. We didn’t know they were stealing your….”

“Quiet!” the voice thundered.

LeMaine flinched, but he didn’t move. A long moment of tense silence ticked past. Every second brought him closer to the Cezians blowing his head off.

A scuffle broke out behind the Cezians, but he couldn’t see anything beyond the guns pointed in his face. Out of the shadows, someone threw something hard and it crashed into LeMaine’s chest.

He took a second to realize that it was a backpack—a backpack with a giant red cross patch on the front flap. It was Kellogg’s backpack.

LeMaine pushed it behind him and instantly raised his hands again. “Thank you.”

He heard Kellogg working fast behind him and LeMaine’s heart skipped a beat. Did he dare to hope?

“Who are you really?” the voice snarled out of the dark. “You came here to help the colonists. You’re military. You came to clear the aliens off this planet!”

“No!” LeMaine croaked. “We only defended ourselves against the Cezians. We didn’t know about the colonists robbing you. We came here to find an Elian diplomat lost somewhere on this planet. Elian Command received a distress call and they assumed it came from the diplomat. We came to find her and get her to safety. That’s all. I’m telling you the truth.” He thought fast. “You have communications with Elian Command. You can confirm this for yourself.”

No one answered him. He’d played his last card. If the Cezians were the ones who sent that distress call, they could contact Elian Command themselves. Command would find out the Hellhounds had been captured on this planet.

Then what? The Hellhounds had a reputation for handling anything. Command sent them to this planet to deal with the situation, not to
